Technology affordances for intersubjective meaning making: A research agenda for CSCL
نویسنده
چکیده
11 Abstract Now well into its second decade, the field of Computer Supported 12 Collaborative Learning (CSCL) appears healthy, encompassing a diversity of topics 13 of study, methodologies, and representatives of various research communities. It is 14 an appropriate time to ask: what central questions can integrate our work into a 15 coherent field? This paper proposes the study of technology affordances for 16 intersubjective meaning making as an integrating research agenda for CSCL. A 17 brief survey of epistemologies of collaborative learning and forms of computer 18 support for that learning characterize the field to be integrated and motivate the 19 proposal. A hybrid of experimental, descriptive and design methodologies is 20 proposed in support of this agenda. A working definition of intersubjective meaning 21 making as joint composition of interpretations of a dynamically evolving context is 22 provided, and used to propose a framework around which dialogue between analytic 23 approaches can take place.

Technology affordances for intersubjective learning: a thematic agenda for CSCL
The study of technology affordances for intersubjective learning is proposed as the thematic agenda for CSCL. Work that does not consider intrinsically interactional mechanisms of learning or does not study affordances specific to technology support is still valuable but is not considered central to the CSCL agenda. A fusion of experimental, ethnographic and design methodologies is also propose...
متن کاملTechnology Affordances for Intersubjective Meaning-Making
The broad field of “computers in education” includes a diversity of approaches to using computers for learning. Each approach is based on an epistemology: a theory of how knowledge is gained. In this presentation, I will characterize the uses of technology and their corresponding epistemologies. I will single out intersubjective epistemologies as timely for research and practice, and call for d...
متن کاملUnderstanding and Supporting Intersubjective Meaning Making in Socio-Technical Systems: A Cognitive Psychology Perspective
This dissertation will elaborate on the understanding of intersubjective meaning making by analyzing the traces of collaborative knowledge construction users leave behind in socio-technical systems. Therefore, it will draw upon more theoretical and more formal models of cognitive psychology to describe and explain the underlying process in detail. This is done with the goal to support intersubj...
متن کاملPositioning theory as analytic tool for understanding intersubjective meaning-making
This paper explores how positioning theory can be used to understand intersubjective meaning-making in CSCL environments. We analyzed asynchronous conversations of three discussion groups in a learning environment designed to teach team process skills. Analysis of the storylines, speech acts and positions taken up by each group provided insights as to how students made meaning in this learning ...
متن کاملMeaning making in CSCL: conditions and preconditions for cognitive processes by groups
Meaning making is central to the interactions that take place in CSCL settings. The collaborative construction of shared meaning is a complex process that has not previously been analyzed in detail despite the fact that it is often acknowledged as being the distinguishing element in CSCL. Here, a three-minute excerpt from a discussion among three students is considered in some detail. The stude...
